Fall break is the ideal time to crush hunger, enjoy chili, and give back to those in need. Now ready for its 8th annual celebration, Red Gold is excited to announce the date of its annual Crush Hunger Saturday that will take place Saturday, October 12th in downtown Elwood.
Over 1,300 participated in the run last year, while thousands attended the Red Gold Chili Cook-Off and Indiana Craft Beer & Wine festival. The majority of race participants and festival goers visit historic Elwood from at least 30 or more miles away, as this particular event is well organized; and a prime event for all participants to earn a personal best with its relative flat course that weaves through the chili festival, historic homes and businesses, and even the Red Gold corporate headquarters. “With many school-aged children on fall break, it’s the perfect way for family and friends to start their Saturday with something fun for everyone,” says Kelsi Fullenkamp, Race Director. The opportunity to engage our youth in the 1-mile walk or 5k helps to encourage future active living and a sense of purpose and philanthropy, as this event has already donated almost $300,000 since its inception in 2012. “It’s an amazing annual event,” says Tim Ingle, Senior Vice President at Red Gold, who encourages families, friends and neighbors to attend regardless of their appetite to walk, run or simply have a bowl of chili on a beautiful autumn day.
The three-part event includes the 8th Annual Run to Crush Hunger, 34th Annual Red Gold Chili Cook-Off and Colts Blue Saturday. For the eighth year in a row, the Run to Crush Hunger unites local communities to promote healthy and active lifestyles, while fighting hunger in Central Indiana by giving back to local area food banks.
The Red Gold Run to Crush Hunger starts at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph Center in downtown Elwood and features a 10K run, 5k run/walk and 1-mile family walk. The race route tours some of Elwood’s most historical landmarks, homes and ends downtown Elwood, where the Red Gold Chili Cook-Off will be heating up. Following the race, Red Gold invites participants and the community to enjoy the Chili Cook-Off, which includes chili tasting, shopping at craft vendors and enjoying beverages at the craft beer and wine garden. Families can also enjoy entertainment from Track Seven DJ, the Indianapolis Colts-in-Motion with mascot, Blue, the Colts Cheerleaders and Nash FM.
“We are very proud of the continued growth and success of the race each year. As the race grows and registration numbers hit an all-time record, we are encouraged by the mission of crushing hunger in our communities,” says Fullenkamp. Each race participant’s entry will provide roughly 120 meals to families affected by food insecurity in Central Indiana.
