Mayor Todd Jones from Elwood challenges Mayors from across Central Indiana to join him in crushing hunger, while encouraging wellness and good nutrition. Mayor Jones will serve as the Grand Marshall for the 7th Annual Red Gold Run to Crush Hunger. “This event has become an amazing cultural tradition in just its 7th year, and the community looks to the second Saturday of each October as the perfect weekend to celebrate active lifestyles, and a chance to give back,” says Jones. Last year’s Grand Marshall was Congresswoman Susan Brooks, and she was thrilled to see visitors from over 12 states and 61 Indiana counties participate in the multi-event day.
Crush Hunger Saturday will take place on Saturday, October 13th, in downtown Elwood. The three-part event includes the 7th Annual Run to Crush Hunger, 33rd Annual Red Gold Chili Cook-Off, and Colts Blue Saturday. For the seventh year in a row, the Run to Crush Hunger unites local communities to promote healthy and active lifestyles, while fighting hunger in Central Indiana by giving back to local area food banks. The race has grown exponentially each year, and this year, the event expects to see many more youth and adults participating in the popular 1 mile march to the Chili Cook-off.
The Red Gold Run to Crush Hunger starts at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph Center in downtown Elwood and features a 10K run, 5k run/walk and a 1-mile family walk. The race routes tour some of Elwood’s most historical landmarks and ends at the Red Gold Chili Cook-Off. Following the race, Red Gold invites participants and the community to enjoy the Chili Cook-Off, which includes chili tasting, shopping at craft vendors and enjoying beverages at the craft beer and wine garden. “There is literally something fun for everyone,” said Tim Ingle, VP of Human Resources at Red Gold, who encourages families, friends and neighbors regardless of their appetite to walk, run or simply have a bowl of chili on a beautiful autumn day. Families can also enjoy entertainment from the Indianapolis Colts-in-Motion with mascot, Blue, the Colts Cheerleaders, Red Gold Pro Fisherman Todd Hollowell and the Pacers Fan Van.
